  • Fall Protection, 29 CFR 1926.501 (construction) and 1910.28 (general industry): The trigger height is six feet above a lower level under the construction standard and four feet under the general industry standard, so which one applies depends on whether the work is classified as construction or maintenance.

  • Respiratory Protection, 29 CFR 1910.134: Applies any time you're wearing a respirator around refrigerant, mold, or combustion by-products.

  • Hazard Communication, 29 CFR 1910.1200: Requires your employer to give you access to safety data sheets for refrigerants, brazing flux, and cleaning chemicals.

How to Assess a Job Site for HVAC Safety Hazards 

Before you begin any HVAC job, take a few minutes to assess the work site. A quick safety assessment can help you identify potential hazards, choose the right precautions, and prevent accidents before work begins. Never assume a site is safe simply because you've worked there before.

This checklist should help you perform a comprehensive job site safety assessment:

  • Look for the obvious hazards first: Check for wet or uneven walking surfaces, low-hanging branches near your ladder path, and any pets or children in the work area.

  • Evaluate the work area: Confirm the electrical panel is accessible and isn't blocked by stored items. If you're working in an attic or crawl space, check if the space is adequately ventilated or if you'll need additional ventilation and another technician on standby.

  • Access fall hazards: If you're servicing a rooftop unit, check whether it's located near an unprotected roof edge and whether the appropriate guardrails, anchor points, or other fall protection are available.

  • Set up your ladder correctly: Position the base of your ladder properly to ensure adequate support before climbing.

  • Use fall protection when required: When working near an unprotected edge, use an appropriate fall protection system to support workers while on site.

To avoid HVAC accidents, always wear PPE. The Refrigeration School Inc. recommends the following:

  • Steel-toed work boots: They protect your feet from falling tools, equipment, and sharp objects while providing better traction on slippery or uneven surfaces. 

  • Full-coverage clothing: Long sleeves and durable work pants help to reduce cuts, abrasions, burns, and skin exposure to chemicals and refrigerants.

  • Thick HVAC work gloves: Thick, task-appropriate gloves protect your hands from sharp sheet metal, hot surfaces, electrical hazards, and cold burns caused by refrigerants.

  • Hard hat: Essential when working on construction sites or in areas where tools, materials, or overhead hazards may fall. 

  • Safety goggles: Shield eyes from dust, metal shavings, refrigerant splashes, and other airborne particles generated during installation and repair jobs. 

  • Face shield: Provides additional protection against flying debris, chemical splashes, and sparks during tasks such as cutting, grinding, or brazing. It should be worn with safety glasses, not as a replacement for them.

  • Respirator: Protects against hazardous airborne contaminants, including refrigerant vapor, mold, dust, insulation fibers, and combustion by-products when the job requires respiratory protection.
