From Cheerleading to Plumbing: An Unexpected Leadership Path

April 15, 2025

Episode Overview

Morgan Chapman learned a lot about successful business mindset when she was part of a competitive cheerleading squad. Lots of new routines were difficult – but she memorized and mastered each one, then moved on to the next challenge.

Chapman eventually cartwheeled into the trades and became Vice President of Friend's Plumbing in Tampa, Florida. It’s a family business where she works with her father and her brother.

Generationally, she says the company is well-rounded.

“ We have this amazing opportunity here with my dad being from the Boomer generation, me being a Millennial, and my brother being Gen Z,” Chapman says. “We all bring something special to the table.”

Nobody who has worked in a family business has ever said the office is a place where everybody sees eye-to-eye on all the decisions that need to be made.

“ It's not always easy [working with family],” Chapman says. “We 100% butt heads, but at the end of the day, we're all here for the same reason.”

She says she’s close with her brother and father.

“Over time we've built a very strong relationship, and we understand each other and realize that we're all human,” Chapman says. “We're all navigating through this life together and figuring it out.”

That philosophy spills over to the rest of the work team, too. Chapman’s breakthrough solution for herself and the business has been delegation.

“You need to be willing to take that time to delegate and teach other people what they need to do to take stuff off your plate,” she says. “Ultimately, if you don’t, you're doing everyone a disservice because you're going to get burned out.”
